Your First Event

Ready for the Apocalypse?

Dystopia Rising is a Community of Players all interested in making sure you have a solid event, so let’s hook you up! The goal of the New Player Experience in Dystopia Rising: The Anvil is to provide as much information as possible so New Players, like yourself, feel prepared for your first Dystopia Rising Experience! Whether you’re a Veteran LARPer or Brand New to the hobby, we want to make sure you’re set up for a fun first event!

Rule book

Dystopia Rising has a our own Rule Book, which you can get as a Free PDF Download on DriveThruRPG! Its the best way for you to get a look at the kinds of options you have for building your First Character! Between the different Lineages and Strains within them, alongside the kinds of skills you want to focus your character around.
Don’t worry about having everything memorized before your first event, but a basic sense of the Themes, Genre, and Rule Set for your first event is the best start, the finer points will stick as you experience them through the events.

Player number

All players for Dystopia Rising receive a unique Player Number, used for registering for events, logging into the Character Database to check your Character Sheet, as well as being able to easily track and update your character between events. To register as a Player for Dystopia Rising and receive a Player Number, contact our Logistics Team to get started.

Check Event Dates

Your Character is Ready to go, now you just need to bring them into the world! You can see all of Dystopia Rising: The Anvil’s planned Event Dates on our Event Calendar, along with all branches Premiere Events! (Premiere Events are Spotlight Events that Each Branch holds once a year). Once you have a date in mind, keep an eye out for when ticket sales open for events.

event check in

Checking In comes in two steps for Dystopia Rising Events, Online Check In before the Event, and Check In at the Event.
Online Check In is done through the Dystopia Rising Character Database - It can be a little confusing your first time, so we have an Online Check In Guide to help walk you through the process.
Check In at the Event is where you will receive your Character Sheet for the Event. Check In will always be located at the Logistics Desk, which after the Event begins, will become the in-game “Post Office”, where you will go to receive items cards gained through different skills and resource camps during the event.

Game off

The main part of the event ends 12pm on Sunday, at which time an all call will go out, announcing “Game Off!” to everyone. Just like the beginning of the event, everyone will gather for “Closing Announcements”, just like we did for Opening Announcements.
Closing Announcements will wrap up any information players will need, a brief summary of the events from over the weekend, and the location of our “Afters” get together. Afters is a time we invite players to come together and enjoy a post event meal together, at a near by restaurant, before heading home. Event Staff will take care of placing a reservation, so all you need do is show up if you’d like to.
After Closing Announcements concludes, players will be dismissed to begin cleaning and packing their personal belongings. Once your personal space for the weekend is cleaned according to the campsites standards, a Guide assigned to your area will sign off on your character sheet and send you back to the Logistics Desk to receive your Camp Clean Up.
For your Camp Clean Up, you will be paired with other players who finished their first clean up around the same time, and be sent to a part of the campsite to make sure it is clear of any remnants of the event. Dystopia Rising has always prided it’s community on leaving our event sites better than we left them, and we hope to continue that trend until the real Mortis Amaranthine emerges and floods the world with Zombies.
Once your area is clean, your party will return to the Logistics Desk and turn in your Character Sheets, so they can be updated after the event, to be ready for your next one!

You’ve done it! You survived dystopia rising: the anvil

After the Event, we do hope you are able to attend our Afters Gathering, but even if not, we always do love any and all Feedback you have and would like to share with us. We hope you enjoy, and we look forward to seeing you at The Anvil again!

Join the Community

We understand the Rule Book is rather large, and that can be intimidating and confusing, especially to new LARPers, but we want to help! We have a wonderful Community Discord and Facebook Group, filled with Staff and Players alike who are eager and ready to help get you into the fun! Feel free to pop in and share any questions you have, and maybe even make some Character Ties before your first event!

Our Discord Server and Social Medias will also be the best place to see all our Updates and Announcements about Chapter Events, Community Events, and Network wide Announcements!

Character Building

Every Survivors has their own Story and “Kit” the bring to share with the Dystopia Rising Setting. A Character’s “Kit” is a lot of things, from their personality and background, to the more tangible aspects, like what they wear, accessorize with, and all the fun little details you can add.
Characters in Dystopia Rising are shaped from their Lineages, Strains, and the lives you decide they’ve lived up until this point, from here, they’ll continue to build upon their story with the world and other survivors around them.
For the costume part of your Character Kit, we highly recommend collecting pieces of clothing and details that you aren’t afraid to damage or lose. Spending a weekend at the Campgrounds we use for our Event Spaces, battling off Zombies and Baddies, while trying to subsist in the Wastelands isn’t always the best conditions for delicate and sentimental items.
Secondhand shopping is a great way to start building a costume that you can be rough and tumble with, and not be disheartened to see stained in fake blood and mud.

Registration

You’ve got the kit, you’ve got the date, now you need your ticket! For New Players’ First Event, Dystopia Rising: The Anvil offers you a Free First Event. We understand LARP, whether monthly occurring, or annual block busters, can be a bit of a costly hobby to try out. With that in mind, we don’t want your first experience to be clouded by worry about the event cost.

game on

Starting roughly around 8pm Friday night of the Event, everyone will begin being directed to our Opening Announcements, which will most commonly be held at the In Game Tavern. Our Opening Announcements is the time for us to give any and all information attendees will need pertaining to that specific event. Things like Safety Concerns, (ex. Fallen Branches on certain Camp Trails, Bridges that get slippery when it rains, etc.) any specific or niche mechanics that may be especially relevant during that event, and any other information our team needs to share before beginning the event.

casting Shift

At some point during the Event, it will be your turn to portray some of the many roles of NPC! This will be during the time slot you selected during your Online Check In, don’t be late!
Before you report to the Story Department, also called “NPC Land”, you’ll want to change from your Character Kit, to your NPC “Theater Blacks”, or other dark based clothing that can be layered upon with other costumes available in our Story Department. Once you arrive, check in with the Guide on duty at the Story Desk, and they will help get you ready for your shift.
During your Casting Shift, you’ll play a variety of roles, depending on the modules planned for that time slot. From harmless merchants, to rampaging threats on the community, to everything in between, NPC sends it out for Characters to help, overcome, or occasional, perish to.
