What to Expect

We’re a multi-day immersive experience.

Expect to take Friday evening to Sunday early afternoon off for the weekend. (Day Games are an option.) Typically, players arrive at 4pm to site to set up in their given cabins and areas and check in to the event physically.

Announcements occur at 8pm, with cars in the parking lot by 9pm.
9pm is game on. After game is on, players portray their given characters for the duration of the weekend. Generally only being out-of-character in order to take care of personal emergencies, or to participate in a 4-Hour NPC Shift, where each player takes the time to portray something in the world for their fellow players!

During the event, one can expect to collaborate with other players. Solve mysteries, uncover hidden plots, and most importantly: Survive. (But remember, dying is always a good story.)

Come Sunday at 12pm, the event is considered done. At this point, players attend closing announcements, and are sent to clean up their personal areas and help tidy-up the camp. After that, character sheets are turned in, and back to Mundania™ you go! (Hopefully with stories, fond memories, and maybe even to an after-event early dinner!)

Rule book

There is a ton of content for Dystopia Rising, and not knowing where to look can be intimidating. Check out this New Player Quick Guide for a quick primer on how the mechanics of the game is played!

Player number

Every attendee to a Dystopia Rising event gets their Player Number!
Your Player Number allows you access to our Database where you can see your character sheets, check-in to events, and more!

To get your player number, once you add your New Player Role in our Discord, use the #player-registration channel and we’ll get you set up!

Character Building

Every Survivor has their own story and kit they create to be a part of the event’s setting.

A character’s kit is a lot of things: from their personality and background, to the more tangible aspects, like what they wear, accessorize with, and all the fun little details you can add to flesh out your concept and story.

Characters in Dystopia Rising are shaped from their Lineages, Strains, and the lives you decide they’ve lived up until this point. Once you attend your first game, they’ll continue to build upon their story within the world and alongside other survivors around them.

For the costume portion of your kit, we highly recommend collecting pieces of clothing and details that you aren’t afraid to damage or lose. Spending a weekend at a campground we use for our events while battling off zed and raiders, while trying to exist in the wastes aren’t always the best conditions for out-of-game delicate and sentimental items.

Secondhand shopping is a great way to start building a costume that you can be rough and tumble with, and not be disheartened to see stained in fake blood and mud.

Checking in!

Checking in to an event comes in two steps: Online check-in before the Event, and check-in at the physical Event.

1. Online check-in is done through the Dystopia Rising Character Database - It can be a little confusing your first time, so we have an Online Check In Guide to help walk you through the process. This is where you secure any NPC/Casting Shifts, and other confirmations about your ticket purchase.

2. Check-in at the event is where you will receive your Character Sheet for the event. Check-in will always be located at the Logistics Desk, which after the event begins, will become the in-game Public Works. This is where most of the game’s mechanics are handled. (Items, Foraging, Crafting, et cetera.)

casting / NPC Shifts

During any given event, most players take 4 hours of their game to help contribute to the collaborative experience.

This is a Casting or NPC shift, where you are given a role, costuming and props to portray out on the playing field. This will be during the time slot you selected during your Online check-in, so please don’t be late!

We ask that players procure darker, naturally colored clothing that lack logos. Similar to theatre stage-hand attire, but feel free to work in other neutral colors instead of flat black.

At your scheduled time, you will head to Operations (Ops, NPC Land, “The Depot.”), and you can check in with a Guide or Staff Member at the Story Desk and they will help you get prepared for the events to unfold!

During your shift, you’ll play a variety of roles, depending on the modules planned for that time slot. You may be a harmless merchants, to a rampaging threat on the settlement, or anything in between. Exciting!

Note: You always have a say in what you can/cannot do, you will never be forced to portray any roles that you feel uncomfortable with, or unable to do.

Game off

The event ends 12pm on Sunday with “Game Off!”
Just like the beginning of the event, everyone will gather for Closing Announcements.

Someone may also announce Afters: a time we invite players to come together and enjoy a post event meal together at a near by restaurant before heading home.

After Closing Announcements conclude, players will be dismissed to begin cleaning and packing their personal belongings.

Once your personal space for the weekend is cleaned according to the campsites standards, a Guide assigned to your area will sign off on your character sheet and send you back to the closing announcements area to receive your Camp Clean Up.

For your Camp Clean Up, you will be paired with other players who finished their personal clean up around the same time, and be sent to a part of the campsite to make sure it is clear of any remnants of the event.

Dystopia Rising has always had an amazing community that leaves event sites better than we left them, and we hope to continue that trend.

Once your area is clean, your party will return to the Closing Announcements area and your Character Sheets may be turned in, so they can be updated after the event, to be ready for your next one!

Dang

That was a lot!

But now you’ve got your feet under you for what to expect for your first event!

We’re excited to catch you in Discord and hear what you’re planning for your first character!
